The Hellenic Air Force (HAF) received its 42nd F-16V Viper upgraded aircraft, marking the halfway point of the fleet modernization program. The project, conducted in partnership with Lockheed Martin and Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAB), aims to upgrade 84 F-16C/D Block 52+ fighters by 2027.

The aircraft are equipped with new systems, including the AESA APG-83 radar, advanced avionics, a modular mission computer, and a modernized cockpit, making the fleet one of the most sophisticated in Europe.

In addition to enhancing interoperability with Rafale fighters, future F-35s, and other NATO platforms, the modernization has already delivered over $1 billion in benefits to the Greek economy. The upgraded Vipers are being distributed among squadrons based in Souda, where pilots are accumulating flight hours exploring the aircraft’s networked warfare capabilities, which include real-time data sharing and superior detection of air, maritime, and ground targets.

Initially, Greece intended to upgrade its entire F-16 fleet but limited the modernization to Block 52+ models, leaving the Block 50s for an internal life-extension program. However, due to slow negotiations and the aging of the aircraft, Athens is considering expanding the purchase of F-35As beyond the 20 already contracted to ensure air superiority against threats in the Aegean region.
